Route Character

Simple, short and fairly avalanche safe route in the Wildschönau with the possibility of expansion.

Starting Point & Village

Starting point: Large, free parking space at the Alpengasthof Schönangeralm. Village: Wildschönau

Ascent & Route

From the car park, pass the inn on the left to the cross-country ski track and continue a few metres out of the valley until to your right a path leads up to the forest on the left-hand side of a ditch. Alternating through woods and meadows, it goes along the path on a slight gradient towards the northeast until you reach a sharp right turn and now follow the path to the south. At the end of the forest one reaches the Breiteggalm at 1529m.
Above the mountain pasture in the same direction further into the already light forest up to a creek ditch which one has crossed fast. A little bit steeper over the alpine meadows to the Kleine Neubergalm from where the Breiteggspitze is already clearly visible, now almost flat to the small upswing on the saddle between our goal and the Wildkarspitze on the left hand side. A few more meters and the summit is reached without any difficulty.

Extension:
From the summit a few meters down to the saddle again and along the wide ridge to Wildkarspitze (1961m) or even further to Breiteggern (1981m).

Descent & Variants

The descent along the whole ascent track is rather unattractive. The following alternatives are more fun:

  • Along the ascent route with momentum over the flat section towards the Kleine Neubergalm and, depending on the conditions, sooner (steeper) or later (flatter) on the left, down the wide open meadow slopes. If you have chosen the flatter variant, you have to go through a bit of light forest to the south to reach the forest lane, the steeper, earlier variant leads directly into this lane which ends on a forest path. A few meters on the forest track and already the next lane starts on the right, mostly with nice pillows over many tree stumps, shortening down again on the forest track which we follow now until shortly after a sharp left hairpin bend. Here a short section through sparse forest and over the open meadow back to the Schönangeralm.

  • Continue up to Wildkarspitze and further towards Breiteggern and north of the gully along the wide western slope down to Breiteggalm.

Map Explanation

  • Slope inclinations are a very important criterion in avalanche risk management. However, slope inclination alone should never be the sole criterion!
  • The resolution for Austria and South Tyrol is based on a digital terrain model (DTM) with 10m resolution. Outside these areas, accuracy is significantly lower.
  • A map can only ever provide a limited view of real conditions.
