Ascent & Route
From the Similaun hut, you start westwards over the glacier towards the summit of the Simulaunspitze. At the glacier crevasses we keep right and continue on the right side of the glacier to the ski depot. Depending on the snow conditions, the summit can also be climbed with skins.
The opposite slope later leads to the west, at the Ötzi memorial keep right towards Stone Man where the descent via Hochjochferner begins.
After the bridge below the Hochjoch Hospiz, you ascend along the summer path to the hut.
Descent & Variants
Descent from Similaunspitze along the ascent route and then at the height of the hut towards the valley to approx. 2850m above sea level. This is the start of the counter-rise.
At Hochjochferner, keep right until you reach the valley. Keep left of the stream until you see Hochjoch Hospiz and the bridge over the river.

Map Explanation
- Slope inclinations are a very important criterion in avalanche risk management. However, slope inclination alone should never be the sole criterion!
- The resolution for Austria and South Tyrol is based on a digital terrain model (DTM) with 10m resolution. Outside these areas, accuracy is significantly lower.
- A map can only ever provide a limited view of real conditions.
