Hochalter
Route Character
Short splitboard / backcountry tour to get used to steeper terrain.Even when the Hochalter is close to the skiing area please keep in mind the danger of avalanches. The summit slope is steep and avalanche endangered. The descent has beautiful natural obstacles.
The Hochalter can be made in about 30 minutes from the top of the lift.
Starting Point & Village
Starting point: The splitboard / backcountry tour starts at the chairlift Hochalterkar Village: Kühtai
Ascent & Route
At the beginning we hike with our splitboards / ski touring ski on the right side of the slope up to the Kreuzleger, then on to the Schwemmsee `le (2408m), a small lake, which is barely visible in the winter. The peak of the Hochalter is identified by a small antenna. We go straight up and are now at the same height to the mountain station of the chairlift Hochalter. Now it is about 1/2 hour to the summit, but take care at the often endangered peak-slope to the summit. (danger of avalanches)
Descent & Variants
As ascent, checking the terrain from the top of Hochalter, you often can find untracked powder at the left side of the ascent. Again, pleas keep in mind the snow- and avalanche conditions.
Refreshments & Huts
Get some food and a drink at Dortmunder Hütte. You have a beautiful view to Hochwanner and Vordere Karlesspitze.

Map Explanation
- Slope inclinations are a very important criterion in avalanche risk management. However, slope inclination alone should never be the sole criterion!
- The resolution for Austria and South Tyrol is based on a digital terrain model (DTM) with 10m resolution. Outside these areas, accuracy is significantly lower.
- A map can only ever provide a limited view of real conditions.
