Description

The most sophisticated splitboard "hardboot" binding system comes from Phantom. Lightness, edge hold and Surf feeling make this Tech binding the first choice for friends of lightweight ski touring boots.

Before the Phantom Alpha, those who wanted to ride in shell shoes had to make some compromises with the "Surfiness" because existing bindings were so high above the board. The Phantom design brings the sole of the boot as close to the board as possible and allows flex in the medial and lateral directions with stiffness from toe to heel. The forces generated by the rider are transferred directly to the board, allowing a high degree of edge control while maintaining a surfing feel.

Phantom Alpha Splitboard

Snowboard alpinists and guides in particular appreciate the use of pin-hard boots in combination with corresponding toe pieces. Significantly increased edge hold during traverses and less weight on the foot, in addition climbing crampons can be attached to the ski boots more firmly. The minds differ on the descent, which is not due to the binding but to the hard boot itself. But there is no shortage of splitboarders who swear by this binding all around and absolutely and for whom nothing else is possible. Of course in the right setup with the right shoe.

The SplitTech system from Phantom combines the best parts from ski alpinism with a patented splitboard binding and interface. The Phantom Alpha is available in four sizes and comes this season in all black. The parts of the system are available separately. The binding (400$), interface cleats in three variations (190$) and the splitboarding pin front pieces (160$) developed in cooperation with Spark R&D.

For a complete setup the climbing aids (90$) and the Spark & Dynafit compatible crampons (100$) need to be added.

Sizes (BaseSoleLength ):

  •     Small: BSL 257-287mm.
  •     Medium: BSL 277-307mm.
  •     Large: BSL 297-327mm.
  •     X-Large: BSL 307-337mm.

So far we have only assembled the bindings for a test and had a detailed look at them, because there were no suitable boots and a touring and driving test was not possible yet. According to our impression and hearing it is a super cool part and you notice a considerable difference in weight compared to a softboots setup.

Phantom mentions the Atomic Backland, Dynafit TLT6 Mountain, Dynafit Speedfit or the Arc'teryx Procline and the rather identical Salomon S/Lab X-Alp as modifiable alpine ski touring boots that are suitable for splitboarding.

If any of you have already had any experience with the Phantom Alpha, we are looking forward to your comments.
