Great tour, it seems if you are touring in high alpine area. You ascent through the Schartenschartl with a section of around 40°. The Descent is through the "Steinkar" exposition North, beginning with a gully of about 45° Experience in steep riding and with Ice Axe and crampons are highly recommended for this route. If you enter the gully using the fixed rope you should be really safe walking in high alpine areas.

How to get there:

From Lienz to Tristach. Than you take the Dolomitenstraße up to Kreithof. If you park at Kreithof you have to take a parking ticket (3€ per day, if you stay over night you can get more day tickets at the Kreithof!). From the Kreithof you ascend the toboggan run or the slope up to the Dolomitenhütte. Ascending by car (snowchains or 4WD) you have strictly to respect the sledding hours  (check out the sign and traffic light at the beginning of the toboggan run)

Route description
Starting point:

Startingpoint is the Dolomitenhütte, except yu ascent from the Kreithof.

Ascent:

The ascent goes along the trekking path up to the Karlsbader hut or you follow the "Kar" direction South. After the first steeper section you will see the Karlsbader Hut behind some little hills. Now you just follow your eyes and ascent through the hills up to the hut.

If you go on to the Schartenschartl you just go on to the East, ascending till you see the Schartenschartl. Than you head on up North ascending the South South-East oriented gully, till you reach the ridge.

Descent:

From the ridge of Schartenschartl you can get the fixed rope to enter the Steinkar. The descent follows the terrain to the edge of the forest. From here again caution and good riding skills are required because there are some rock cliffs. Through the forest you ride to a forest road wich leads you directly to the toboggan run (Can be good to change into hike mode again). At the toboggan run you have three possibilities, you ride the toboggan run, you get up to the slope beside and ride the slope or you hike up again (approx. 400 vertical meters) to the Dolomiten Hut.

    Comment / Trip report:
