Splitboard Test 2014-15, Uphill and downhill performance properly tested. We are happy to present you the results of 13 brands and 17 Splitboards.

The boards in our independent splitboard test have been properly tested while touring, freeriding and also on the slopes. So we got a very broad perspective regarding the uphill and downhill performance. This is done to make our test the most objective evidence as possible.

The conditions changed from powder to hardpack and slush. While touring we had different terrain from relaxed routes to challenging splitboard mountaineering.

Our international test-team consists of riders (between 70 and 100 kilos, the ladies less ;-), who all have many years of splitboard touring experience and know exactly what is really important and what is less important to judge the performance of a splitboard.

We have been asked many times why we don`t assign "Special Awards".

In order not to distort the test results with striking awards! The boards we tested must perform in all disciplines. Due to the fact that each judge has his personal riding style, it is impossible to crown "a best Freestyle" -Splitboard. For this purpose Freestyle Boards should only be tested by Freestylers beeing compared directly in the discipline of Freestyle. In practice, if you do splitboarding in the backcountry this is not realistic. You need solid all-round qualities. Of course, the boards differ regarding their special characteristics like shape, profile, flex,... and so they have their advantages in a certain riding style.

The five splitboards awarded with the "Splitboarding Editors Selection" have the best all-round performance. Splitboarding Editors Selection 2014/15This coupled with your prefered riding style and area of ??use makes it possible to find your personal winner.

The Boards have been tested with the SP-Splitboard Binding, the Spark Magneto and the Voile Light Rail. Except the Splitsticks which has it`s own interface and concept and except the Plum which also has it`s own interface.

All tested boards were equipped with 70-30 Mix-Skins from Kohla.

Splitboard Test 2015

Here you get a summary of the tested categories to make it easier for you, finding a suitable board for your personal riding style.

  • Riding Style/Flex: Describes the orientation of the splitboards, whether they are more Powder, Allmountain, Speed or Freestyle orientated. The Flex description is a "felt" Flex, so it is a subjective value.
  • Riding Performance: Here we reflect the most important factors for a Splitboard, agility and edgegrip. Other parameters belong to personal habits.
  • Uphill Performance: The most important thing at the ascent is a good skin, what we haven`t tested at this point. Good edgegrip, traction (in our test it is a part of traversing, so if the board turns around as the needle of a compass or if it is stable and pulls forward exactly) and little weight. If the board is a bit heavier you can compensate it easily with a lighter backpack or professional clothing.
  • Features: Regarding the fact that the investment for a splitboard is a bit bigger, the finishing is also very important to us. Also the sustainability should be kept in mind as we have fun in the nature. So nature should be protected and the companies should put their grain to environmental friendly production.
  • Statement: Every tester describes the board with his personal statement. If more than one person tested the board, the statement is a conjunction between the testers opinions.

I fell in love with the Beast when I did the first challenging traverse and also got convinced at the descent in all conditions. Powder, ice, crust, and wet snow. The Beast feels at home in all conditions.

GNU Beauty Test

Due to the Camber-Rocker-Camber profile, the Beauty is a playful, pretty soft board which you can rely on even when it gets serious. Precise edgehold under rough conditions, nice float in powder and always agile. Also hassle-free at ascent and that's how a ladies split has to be.

Goodboards Legends 164 Splitboard:

With this classical camber board you can do all you expect from a backcountry board like that. It is well rideable in all kinds of conditions, but you need the skills to ride it properly. The Legend splitboard is on the stiffer side, that makes it more precise for heavier riders or you need to ride it powerful to get out the qualities. If you have the right weight you get a good fellow, solid grip on your way up and down again. The wood fnishing is noble and a timeless beauty.

Jones Explorer 159 Splitboard:

Jones Explorer Test

The Jones Explorer Split is relatively soft. Compared to it`s brother Solution it is less agile but still fun on the descent at hardpack or powder. It is a great board for beginners or advanced splitboarders.

The Jones Solution received a massive rocker, which makes it very versatile. The camber down to the tail gives good grip and traction on the edge, both in ascent and in the descent. If it is steep and powdery you can feel the true qualities, but also in wet snow and wind-blown snow you can ride it very well.

The combination of the Plum binding with this board gave us a kind of WOW experience. For a medium flex board it has excellent grip at the ascent and very direct response and precision on the descent and a good float, too. Sustainably produced in France.

The Rome Double Agent 154 is a very freestyle oriented Splitboard. It is excellent for that style of riding. Even when the length is short it has an amazing grip ascending and descending. The harder Flex makes it easy to stick even big airs with style and control.

The Whiteroom feels best in powder and due to it´s hybrid profile, kind of s-rocker, it is great for all sorts of backcountry touring. The low weight makes it really agile and the flex is on the stiffer side. So you get enough pop when needed.

The Rossignol Mag Tek Split  is superagile and rides through everything you can imagine, but it`s abilities are even bigger. Stability at the ascent,  massive float in pow and strong edgegrip in crust or windblown snow on the descent. The Rossignol XV wants to be ridden fast with power in your feet. Für Frauen beim Aufstieg gut geeignet (wendig und leicht), bei der Abfahrt merkt man, dass es ein hartes Brett ist. Ich kann es weiterempfehlen.
