The climbing skin is a climbing aid. Splitboard skins (ski skins) are attached to the bottom of splitboards and they provide grip on the snow during a splitboard ascent. They prevent the skis (splitboard halves) from slipping backwards and at the same time enable the skis to be pushed off and glided forward.
The manufacturers of splitboard skins are mostly the same as the ones that are established in the ski touring segment, but splitboard skins are wider than the other skins available. If skins are sold in a set with the board, they usually have special fixation mechanisms.
The skins are differentiated according to the material used: pure mohair skins, synthetic or mixed skins.
Important information about Splitboard skins:
- Climbing characteristics are very important to avoid slipping back in steeper terrain.
- Gliding properties are also very important, as a lot of power can be saved on longer tours.
- The combination of excellent climbing and gliding properties, combined with good durability, low weight and excellent adhesive is the secret of the Sticky & Glide Splitboarding Skin.
- The adhesive that joins the skins to the splitboard must cover a wide temperature range and allow repeated application.
Crampons are part of every splitboard binding and especially in springtime they are a must-have equipment. So buy it right away!
