Maladeta, a splitboard mission in the spanish Pyrenees. Great Landscape, warm hearted people and fun corn to ride. Spanish version below the article!

It was two weeks before the official start of summer as Jirka Hruza of Yellow Plug decided with his Czech "Riding Buddy" Mira Kube to start a split board mission in the Spanish Pyrenees. Mira is not sure about the snow conditions at that time, but since he is currently in Barcelona, he finally joins. Today is Sunday, 8th June, which usually means larger crowds in Benasque valley. But the two have no choice so they start early in the morning to climb the Maladeta (3308M) by splitboard.

Maladeta still far away

The road to Besurta is already open, so it only requires a short hike with the boards on the backpack - to Renclusa Mountain Hut. From here we can skin up to the peak.

At sunrise we meet the first climbers who are all on the way to Aneto (3404M), the highest mountain in the Pyrenees. From PortillÛn we are now hiking alone enjoying the ascent in bright sunshine.

Passing Colado de Rimaya (3150M), we take the boards on the backpack and walk on with crampons and ice ax. A short corridor separates us from Maladeta peak, the snow is soft (normal for this time of the year) and it is relatively comfortable to hike. We reach the summit and ... the views are amazing, we take a picture, take a little refreshment to us and prepare for descent.

At the descent  we will have passages up to 40 ° steep and wonderful corn snow. With a broad grin on our faces, we come back to Renclusa hut. We never would have expected that a June mission in Spain can be as good as that, giving us so much fun on the descent.

So now the hike back to the parking lot and a nice cold beer.

It was not the first time that I was at the Maladeta, but the first time in June. No doubt this area is a "Special Place" and just the beauty of the scenery is worth a visit. We'll be back!

Accomodation:

Llanos del Hospital (Benasque)

In winter you can directly start here

Refugio de Renclusa:

Touring options:

There are a lot but the best ones are Maladeta and Aneto

The pass road to the parking Besurta normally opens in June, then there is also the possibility to take a public bus to the parking.

Of course you can stay with the campers also in the parking (overnight possible).

Thanks Jirza for the nice report, we would be happy to be able to read more from you next year.
If you understand Spanish, you also should have a look at the shop from the guys!
